The courts have two choices to make when they are presented with a case that has the potential to receive extensive pre-trial publicity. One person takes the initiative to limit the availability of the media to content that could potentially be harmful. Once the evidence has been made public, the second strategy is one of reaction, and its objective is to lessen the impact that it will have on the case (Surette, 2014). The first strategy entails limiting the access of the media to information that has been deemed unfavorable by a court or, if the information has already been obtained by the media, limiting its dissemination. If the information is already in the possession of the media, the second strategy involves limiting its availability.
